About the Library
History of the University Library
1957 – A library was established for lecturers and students of the Teacher Training College in a building at 79 Dąbrowskiego Street. Its initial collection of 5,000 volumes came from the dissolved Higher School of Economics.
1969 – The library was moved to a new building at 13/15 Zawadzkiego Street (now 13/15 Armii Krajowej Street), where the lending service and reading room were located on the first floor.
1971 – By the ordinance of the Minister of Education and Higher Education dated August 24, 1971, concerning the organizational structure of the Higher Teacher Training School in Częstochowa (Official Gazette of the Ministry of Education and Higher Education 1971 No. A-11, item 90), the Main Library was established as a separate organizational unit.
1974 – With the creation of the Higher Pedagogical School in Częstochowa, the Main Library of the Higher Pedagogical School (WSP) was established.
1976 – Two main divisions were created within the Main Library: the Acquisitions and Cataloguing Division and the Lending Division.
1979 – The library's collections were moved to the former "Desygnat" Student Dormitory at 36a Zawadzkiego Street (now 36a Armii Krajowej Street), occupying the second and third floors. The second floor housed the lending service, reading room, catalogs, administrative offices, and director’s office, while the third floor was used for storage.
1982/1983 – A new organizational structure for the library was approved, comprising the following units: Acquisitions and Collection Development Division, Cataloguing Division with a Catalog Section, Lending Division, Storage and Collection Preservation Division, Independent Information and Bibliography Section with a Reprography Workshop, Special Collections Section, Administrative Office
1989 – Due to the growing collection, the library expanded into basement and ground floor spaces at 36a Armii Krajowej Street.
1993 – The library began cataloging its collections using the UNIKAT computerized library system.
1995 – The Main Library launched its first website.
1997 – Faculty and institute libraries were established within the network: Institute of Music Library, Interfaculty Center for Practical Language Learning Library, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences Library, Institute of Foreign Philologies Library
1997 – The UNIKAT database was converted to the new TINLIB library system.
1999 – The project for constructing a book storage facility for the Main Library was approved.
2001–2003 – Construction of the library's storage facility was completed.
2002 – A modern exhibition hall was created on the ground floor of 36a Armii Krajowej Street to enhance exhibition capabilities.
2003 – A web interface for the library system was introduced, enabling online catalog access.
January 15, 2004 – The new storage facility was officially opened. The three-story, air-conditioned building housed the Main Library's collection.
October 1, 2004 – The Higher Pedagogical School was transformed into Jan Długosz Academy in Częstochowa.
2006 – The library became an active contributor to the Silesian Digital Library by digitizing resources related to the Częstochowa region and Jasna Góra.
2010 – The Institute of Fine Arts Library was added to the library network.
2012 – The library repository was launched on the dLibra platform.
2013 – The Faculty of Social Sciences Library was established.
2014 – The Faculty of Arts Library was created by merging the Institute of Music Library and the Institute of Fine Arts Library.
2014 – Collaboration began with Crossref, the official agency for registering DOI links for scholarly publications.
2018 – The library initiated a project to enhance access to public e-services, integrate the library system with a digital library, digitize unique cultural and academic resources, and implement them at Jan Długosz Academy.
2018 – Additional libraries were added to the network, including the Institute of Law, Administration, and Management Library and the Faculty of Pedagogy Library.
June 1, 2018 – The institution was renamed Jan Długosz University of Humanities and Sciences in Częstochowa.
2019 – A major reorganization included:
- The Main Library was transformed into the University Library, becoming the core of the library and information system at UJD.
- The Institute of Foreign Philologies Library and the Faculty of Pedagogy Library were dissolved, with their collections integrated into the University Library's holdings.
- The Faculty of Arts Library was reorganized into the Music Arts Library.
- The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences Library was renamed the Library of Exact, Medical, and Health Sciences.
- The Institute of Law, Administration, and Management Library was renamed the Library of Legal Sciences.
- The Foreign Language Learning Center Library was not included in UJD's library and information system.
December 2019 – The KOHA library system was implemented under an EU-funded project.
January 2, 2020 – The KOHA system and the UJD Digital Library were launched.
2020 – Access to licensed electronic resources was facilitated via a proxy server.
2021 – The library signed a cooperation agreement with the National Universal Catalog (NUKAT).
2021 – Funding was secured for retro-converting music scores and selected humanities and social sciences journals.
April 1, 2023 – Structural changes merged two divisions into the Acquisitions and Cataloguing Division.
June 1, 2023 – The institution was renamed Jan Długosz University in Częstochowa.
2023 – Further reorganization merged branch libraries into the University Library, leaving only the University Library and the Faculty of Exact, Medical, and Health Sciences Library operational.
2025 – The library website was revamped with a new graphic design.
